It benefits the community by employing, by earning from it. And then even the government also earns money from the project.”

He pledged to advise government to support the revitalisation of the project so that its intended benefits can reach the people of Sheema.

The commitment from Parliament provides an important opportunity to strengthen collaboration between government, Parliament, local leadership and TRIDI around an investment designed to generate long-term economic value.

TRIDI remains committed to commercialisation

For TRIDI Executive Director Dr. Clet Wandui Masiga, the Sheema investment represents much more than infrastructure.

It is the product of years of innovation, research and government-supported development aimed at establishing a commercially viable sericulture value chain.

Dr. Masiga reaffirmed TRIDI’s determination to pursue the initiative through legal, peaceful and institutional channels, while protecting the organisation’s investment and intellectual property.

He emphasised that TRIDI will continue engaging relevant government institutions to find a sustainable way forward and realise the commercial potential of the innovation.

“For us, we shall pursue legal and peaceful means. We are not going to be confrontational, but this is true investment.”

His position underscores TRIDI’s commitment to protecting innovation while working constructively with stakeholders to find solutions that serve the broader development interests of Uganda.

From innovation to opportunity

The Sheema engagement has once again highlighted the bigger question facing Uganda’s science and innovation sector: How do we turn investments in research and innovation into businesses, jobs, products and revenue?

TRIDI believes sericulture can form part of that answer.

With the right support and collaboration, the value chain has the potential to connect research and innovation with production, skills development, employment, enterprise and commercialisation.

The Parliamentary Committee is continuing its oversight of TRIDI’s sericulture investments, with visits to other stations in Mubende, Mukono, Kayunga and Kween planned during the week.

The opportunity is here. Let’s unlock it.

The Sheema community has expressed its desire to see the investment deliver. Parliament has indicated its willingness to follow up on the resources required. TRIDI remains committed to its innovation and to pursuing a constructive path towards commercialisation.

The next step is for stakeholders to work together to unlock the investment, protect innovation and turn the sericulture opportunity into jobs, incomes and economic value for Ugandans.

For TRIDI, the vision remains clear; innovation should not end in laboratories or facilities, it should reach communities, create opportunities and contribute to Uganda’s development.

By John Jimmy Musimbi What if a sericulture investment could create jobs for young people, generate income for communities and contribute to government revenue?
