National Certificate in Wood Working Technology

COURSE OVERVIEW

Woodwork Technology offers a series of course units intended to provide students with experiences in industrial systems and processes within a controlled environment that provides optimum exposure to “real life” situations. Woodwork Technology caters to students’ individual learning styles, fostering creativity and individuality. The problem solving approach used in Woodwork Technology provides the student with the greatest amount of creative learning while providing a platform for the practical application of knowledge gained in Math, Science, Computer,  Social Studies and Language Arts. Woodwork Technology offers opportunities for students to develop transferable skills in furthering their vocational, technical or academic career goals.

This programme emphasizes sustainable harvesting and utilization of forest resources.

The course is for two years and enrollment is every January of the new year. At the end of the course trainees sit for both UNEB and Trade Test Examinations for assessment.  Appropriate harvesting and processing technologies, physical, mechanical and chemical properties of wood, diversified use and marketing of forest products are taught.

This programme emphasizes  the following:
  1. Understand detailed architectural drawings, schematics, shop drawings, and blueprints
  2. Prepare and set up machines and tooling for woodwork manufacturing
  3. Lift wood pieces onto machines, either by hand or with hoists
  4. Operate woodworking machines, including saws and milling and sanding machines
  5. Listen for unusual sounds or detect excessive vibration in machinery
  6. Ensure that products meet industry standards and project specifications, making adjustments as necessary
  7. Select and adjust the proper cutting, milling, boring, and sanding tools for completing a job
  8. Use hand tools to trim pieces or assemble products

 

REQUIREMENTS

National Certificate in Woodwork Technology (NCWT) (Examined by UBTEB)

Admission requirements: A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the Uganda National Certificate in Woodwork Technology (NCWT) on meeting any of the following minimum qualifications:

A candidate should have obtained a Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least 3 credit passes one of which must be in Physics, Art, or Technical drawing and must have passed English and Mathematics.

At least a credit in Uganda Junior Technical  Certificate from a recognized institution in any of the  fields or any other  field as approved by the Selection Committee constituted by the Ministry of Education and Sports.

Duration: 2 years.
