SIGNIFICANCY OF BANANA FIBRE IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY OF UGANDA

Banana fiber got from banana yarn. It is so interesting how we can get yarn from the banana fibre. Almost every part of the banana is of importance, banana is well known for food, fruit. its leaves are of importance because they can be used as medicines in some cultures and others use it to feed cattle.

After the fruit is harvested the stem (trunk) is fed to animals or used as manure in the garden to increase on the yield of the crops. This stem is a rich source of natural fibre which when utilized can generate profits by offering multiple products like fertilizers, compost, textile and many more.

The fibre material comes from the stalk or trunk portion which we may call a stem of a banana plant. While it is certainly a unique idea, the textile made of a banana fibre is used in textile material.

Since at Tropical institute we are innovators, through its research found out that banana is not only used for food, medicine or feeding animals but can also be inferred into garment preparation. Therefore, our fashion and design department came up with the idea of making sponges, door mats, carpets among others.

The engineering department managed to extract the yarn and the fashion and design department dyed the fibre with different colors to make products of their desire.

The utilization of banana fibre would be an innovative method to reduce pollution effectively and boost our economy for a better world while advocating for Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU).
