MPs INSPECT GOVERNMENT-FUNDED SERICULTURE
STATION IN KIRUHURA, TRIDI BLAMES FUNDING HALT FOR DELAY IN
BYANAMIRA PROJECT
The Parliamentary Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation has started inspecting government-funded science
projects across the country, beginning with Tropical Institute of Development Innovations, TRIDI, sericulture stations.
The committee today visited the Byanamira Sericulture Station in Kiruhura District to assess the utilisation of government
funds and establish why the facility is yet to become operational.
The inspection is being conducted under Rule 193 of the Parliament Rules of Procedure as part of a nationwide oversight
exercise on government-funded science and technology
projects.
Today, the committee led by Kashari North Member of Parliament Patrick Musinguzi visited TRIDI’s Sericulture
Station in Byanamira, Kiruhura District.
The legislators, together with area leaders and Principal Assistant Clerk to Parliament Jackline Muhimbise, toured the
facility and questioned TRIDI management on the progress and future of the project.
Area leaders expressed concern over the delay in operationalising the station, saying the community had expected
the project to create opportunities for youth skilling, employment and income generation.
In response, TRIDI Executive Director Dr. Clet Wandui Masiga said the project stalled after government funding was halted,
rather than because of mismanagement.
The committee says the inspection will help establish how government funds allocated to the sericulture stations have
been utilised and what is required to make the projects fully
operational.
The Science, Technology and Innovation Committee will tomorrow proceed to Sheema District to inspect another TRIDI
sericulture station.
